Owen has been responding well to the diet plan his nutritionist has put him on. He is now eating between six and eight small meals a day. He has put on several pounds and we are very happy with that. Something else that helped dramatically was eliminating as much high-fructose corn syrup products as possible. He likes the Jones brand all natural sodas and I found a place in town to get packs of it for a lower price than expected. Yes, he sometimes misses his late evening Mt. Dew, but knows that he feels better without it and has asked me to stop purchasing it!
We just returned from a week long vacation in New England. Traveling with PKU can be a challenge, but we have lots of practice. This time I packed serving size baggies of his low-phe pasta and some powdered sauce mix as well as instant potatoes, dehydrated veggies, low-protien snacks and all of his formula. He gave into temptation only once and had a (gasp in shock) blt sandwich. Of all the things he could crave that is higher in phe, at least its fatty bacon. We had a great time hiking, taking factory tours, wandering around coastal towns and shopping. He came back two pounds heavier and we hope he can keep it up.
