Owen had his annual appointment at the genetics clinic at UVA. He has not been there in three years because we have been communicating with his nutritionist via email nearly every month. We felt that he really needed to go see Dr. Wilson and his nutritionist because the ineveitable consequences of being underweight plus the damage that PKU does was becoming too much. Owen is suffering from true hypoglycemia as well as depression. He was able to deal with the latter but with my unemplyoment and our recent home purchase, it is getting out of control. On the day of the appointment he had a crying spell so extreme that I was going to ask the hospital to admit him once we arrived. However, his nutiritionist thinks that we can treat him from home. We think his symptoms of hypoglycemia  will diminish if we can get some weight on him. So, we are adding corn starch to everything he is eating and will be trying a calorie supplement. Owen is only 105 pounds and 5 foot 9 inches. He is very underwieght. She is also looking at a appetite enhancer. Dr. Wilson mentioned that some anti-depressants have increased appetite as a side affect so we are considering that as well. From here we may go back to his PCP to see what options we have on that front.

I have noticed in the last few days that Owen has been trying to force himself to eat more. I continue making all of his favorite foods in hopes that at some point this will help.

On another note, are there any adults out there with PKU who are on an HMO (preferably Anthem). If so, what is the HOM covering? We are being forced into one in October.
