We had a fabulous trip to and from MN. Owen's sister got married on the 25th. We were blessed with a beautiful day.

Traveling with a PKU child is difficult. It is the same with a PKU adult. First, make sure there is enough formula for each day and that it is easily accessible. Up until recently Owen was on a formula that came in packets and had to be mixed with water and placed in a blender. To take it on the road meant handmixing, clumps in the drink and generally, Owen avoiding the stuff at all costs. If the finances were available, we would order a case of the Maximum X PHE "juice" boxes instead. That helped, but he would still not take the full amount each day. This trip was MUCH BETTER! Yes, the Vitaflo Coolers take up more space than packets, but the convenience cannot be beat. We put what we needed for the drive to MN in a small carry-on style bag with other drinks and snacks. All Owen had to do was reach behind the seat and grab one. We brought an entire case for the six hotel days and did the same bag method for the trip home.

Second, make sure there is enough low-pro foods to eat. This is the most tricky if you are like us and make most of the foods instead of purchasing the expensive stuff online. When it comes to eating out the choices are usually salad and french fries or baked potato. We try to stop at places like Cracker Barrel or Boston Market so that he can get a "side item" meal. That adds carrots, mashed potatoes, green beans and sweet potato casserole to the normally boring menu. We packed DP cookies, smooshed fruit leather, chips and gatorade for snacks. The hotel supplied breakfasts so Owen had a piece of toast with marmalade a couple of times. I also packed powdered non-dairy creamer that, when added to water, makes a milk substitute for cereal. He did this a couple of days as well. Rice Dream juice boxes are also good for this. Owen can only have the classic variety though because the enriched gives him a bad stomach.  Other meals that he had while out was fried rice (with the egg picked out),veggie curry on rice noodles and veggie subs (without the cheese).

We are waiting for his blood test (taken mid trip) to see if all of this worked. This is the first time we have traveled where he did not lose weight...so something worked.
